Subject: More for Larry!
While NYC got 10 nights, (I got 3 of them) this was an epic one for the Westies. This show had all the energy of the Nokia run with the hometown vibe that only comes in SF. Surprise Acoustic Set was perfect in every way, as we were treated to Phil on the upright and the Master Larry Campbell on MORE than guitar. Listing Larry Campbell as just guitar is a bit light! How about Pedal Steel, Mandolin, Violin, Dobro, and honky vocals on Deep Elem Blues? And, that Chest Fever in the 1st set was screaming. Jackie held is own all night, as he has all year. This boy has earned his stripes, and what a way to spend your Golden Birthday! They no doubt surprised him with the cake, he is still wondering if they are going to go back into “Mexican Girl!”
Other highlights: Energetic and bouncy Bertha opener, smoldering guitar and vocals from Jackie on Sugaree, solid Shakedown, BALOON DROP, loved Molitz’s keyboard wizardry on Unbroken Chain, Phil’s growl after singing the Help On The Way line “without love in a dream it will never come true,” & then Molo’s fireworks on the last solo during Help; on the soundboard after he rifles off that last run, you can hear him yell “all the bitches in the house say YEAH,” and we top it all off with the tender Brokedown as the back end of a sweet double encore.
This performance will stand up to anything on this entire tour and with this lineup thus far, and is most worthy of the 4 CD's to stock it. Get it, learn it, live it, love it...
